It has been over a month since the dismissal of Darvin Ham, and the Los Angeles Lakers still need a head coach.
Although LeBron James had a stellar season and Anthony Davis played a career-high 76 games, the Lakers ended a disappointing year with a first-round exit that cost Ham his job.
For the past month, JJ Redick has dominated the betting markets as the favorite to become the Lakers’ head coach.
However, a bombshell report shook up the betting markets last week — even though it didn’t come to fruition.
The Lakers had been putting the full court press on UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley and reportedly made him a massive, long-term contract offer, per ESPN and FOX Sports college basketball reporter John Fanta.
With the news, DraftKings Sportsbook took down the betting odds on the Lakers’ next coach.
Then, on Monday, Hurley officially rejected the Lakers’ offer in order to stay at UConn.
Prior to the news, Reddick was the favorite to land the job at -225, followed by James Borrego (+600) and Sam Cassell (+700).
The odds have not been reposted at DraftKings.
The Athletic recently reported that James is “not involved” in the Lakers’ coaching hire. That same report said that the Lakers believe Redick is a “Pat Riley-like coaching prospect who could both help the franchise in the short term and lead it for years.”
